Tax Incentives & Retirement

Volunteering is rewarding but there are financial incentives. The (Tax Incentive Program (TIP) was established by the Maryland Legislature in 1995 and took effect for tax year 1996. It has had several enhancements over the years. The program allows qualifying individuals to reduce their Maryland taxable income in 2020 by up to $6,000. In 2021, that number increases to up to $6,500 and up to $7,000 for 2022 and beyond.

Maryland residents receive tax credit after three years of active service with a volunteer fire/EMS department in Prince George’s County earning a minimum of 50 points a year. Plus, active members with 25 years of active duty are afforded a generous annual retirement program with monthly benefits called LOSAP (Length of Service Award Program).

 

LOSAP is a county funded program which provides an annual retirement with monthly benefits. After a volunteer earns 25 of years of active service (50 points per year) and reached the age of 55 with a volunteer fire, rescue or EMS department in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Free Training

Whether you have tons of fire/ems experience or new to public safety, we offer numerous basic to advanced fire, rescue, EMS & leadership courses through county, state and federal programs as well as our own. These courses are free of charge to active members of the department and offer opportunity for progression through our operational roles and ranks. Classes are conveniently located throughout Prince George’s County and the region, with schedules to meet just about anyone’s needs including nights and weekends.

Tuition Reimbursement Programs

There are several tuition reimbursements programs opportunities offered to our volunteers. They include the Charles W. Riley Fire & Emergency Medical Services Tuition Reimbursement Program and the Katha T. Parrish Memorial Scholarship Fund of the PGCVF&RA Ladies Auxiliary. Additionally, The Maryland State Fireman’s Association (MSFA) offers a variety of scholarships to members of the state’s volunteer fire, rescue, and EMS service. These programs are awarded through the organization’s scholarship committee. More information on these programs, which cover a wide variety of higher education costs, can be provided upon request.

Wills for Heroes

Qualifying members of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association have the opportunity to receive a free last will and testament from the MSFA.

NVFC Membership & Incentives

Discounted memberships to the National Volunteer Fire Council are available for Maryland State Firemen’s Association members. Benefits include a $10,000 AD&D insurance policy, access to resources and online training, educational discounts, product discounts and much more.
